A share in Britain means the part control of a company with the right to vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), receive a dividend, etc.
In the USA, the word used for "share" is stock. They have the exact same meaning, it just depends on which language, English or American, you're speaking.
To further confuse the issue, in Britain the word stocks is used for the American word Inventory, that is goods held with the intention of selling them, but are not yet sold.
